Newark Community Raises Over £18,000 for Homeless Young People at The Big Newark Sleep Out 2024

The final total for The Big Newark Sleep Out has been announced, and it is truly impressive. The event raised an astounding £18,853.04 showcasing the community’s dedication to supporting vulnerable young people facing homelessness which will be shared between the two charities.

YMCA Newark & Sherwood and the Newark Emmaus Trust invited the community to sleep out, with over 90 participants from businesses and the public spending a night under the stars to raise funds and awareness for homelessness. Held at the YMCA Village, the sleep out highlighted the harsh realities faced by those without a home while fostering a spirit of solidarity and empathy. A special mention goes to, Newark & Sherwood Homelessness Team, who raised £4,224 the most money as a group and Mathew Derbyshire from Tallents Solicitors who raised an incredible £1,350.

Steffen Benbow, Executive Director of YMCA Newark & Sherwood, echoed these sentiments: “The community’s response was incredible. The funds raised will significantly impact the lives of young people who rely on our services. We are grateful to everyone who participated and supported this event. Together, we are building a brighter future for those in need.”

Nikki Burley, Chief Executive of Newark Emmaus Trust, expressed her heartfelt gratitude: “The support we received from local businesses, the public and schools was overwhelming. Events like this not only generate essential funds but also raise awareness about homelessness and the challenges young people face in our community. It’s inspiring to see so many people come together to make a difference.  I would like to say a massive thank you to those who slept out on what was a very long night and also to those that sponsored us all.”

The success of The Big Newark Sleep Out was made possible by the generous contributions of individuals, businesses, and local organisations. A special thank you goes to Buttercross Estates for their support and Reuseabox for providing the cardboard boxes used to create makeshift shelters. Additionally, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the schools and nursery that supported the event by holding a pyjama day and fundraising initiatives: Holy Trinity Catholic Academy, Barnby Road Academy, Lovers Lane Primary School, Sir Donald Bailey Academy and YMCA Nursery.

The money raised will go towards supporting various programmes and services aimed at alleviating homelessness in the community. Both YMCA Newark & Sherwood and Newark Emmaus Trust are committed to providing essential resources, guidance, and support to help young people build stable and independent lives.

Mark your calendars for the next Big Newark Sleep Out on Friday, 7th March 2025 with registrations opening soon.
