Daring team members at YMCA Newark and Sherwood are preparing to brave the waves after teaming up with You Can Do Sport Academy for this year’s Dragon Boat Festival.
The local youth charity has recruited five budding sailors for the annual racing challenge, which will take place from 10am-5.45pm on Sunday 19 September at Riverside Park, in Newark. The event involves participants taking to the waters in their teams – with a drummer at the front beating time – for a minimum of three races, before the fastest team goes through to the semi-final competition to win exciting prizes.
Participants will include YMCA’s Becky Dobb, Caroline Cartwright, Neil Maclaren, Harvey Dobb and Ben Leese; also Mike Lowery (drummer), Natalia Hart (YCDS), Amy Crouch, Klaudia Podciechowska, George Anderson, Alex T, Anika Dickens and Savannah Smith.
As one of the fastest growing water activities in Britain today, this year’s family fun day has been organised in aid of Beaumond House and the Children’s Bereavement Centre.
Caroline Cartwright, Marketing Manager at YMCA Newark and Sherwood, said: “Team building and getting stuck into community activities is such an integral part of what we’re about at YMCA, and we can’t wait to hit the waves to raise awareness for such important causes.
“We hope to see lots of friendly faces to support us as the dragon boats will certainly not be a sight to be missed!”
