On 29 January 2018, Nottinghamshire YMCA hosted an invitation-only open evening event at Newark RHP to mark the launch of the Newark and Sherwood Community and Activity Village planning permission award.

‘Dedicated team’

The event, which was held to thank those organisations and individuals who made this planning permission possible.

The plan is set to include a varied range of services including a community cafe, before and after school clubs, nursery and crèche, day camps, inclusive sports, adventure sports, climbing wall and family activities.

The project has already secured funding from Newark and Sherwood District Council and Newark Town Council, with Nottinghamshire YMCA pledging £1.5million to match funds from charitable trusts and contributions.

Our dedicated and passionate YMCA staff who attended the celebration event included Neil MacLaren, Steve Scott, Craig Berens, Todd Cauthorn, Simon Brighty, Julian Phillips and Elizabeth Savage. Representatives from Newark and Sherwood District Council and local sports clubs and organisations were invited to the event. On the evening, these included Newark Town FC, Active4Today, Newark Football Association, British Cycling, Tunstall Smith King, William Saunders, Newark Town FC, and Sustrans.

The event kicked off at 7pm with welcome drinks and a buffet. This was followed by an overview and welcome speech from Todd Cauthorn, Operations Manager for Children, Young People and Families.

Attendees were encouraged by key YMCA staff to take the opportunity to discuss how they could get involved in supporting this innovative venture.

Roger Blaney, Leader of the Council, spoke of the greater benefits of the unique facility to the sporting and wider community in Newark and the surrounding area, and the welcome major investment for Newark and its surrounding areas.

The Newark and Sherwood YMCA Community and Activity Village is being project managed by Rayner Davis Architects (RDA). A big thank you to all YMCA staff involved in the organisation, planning, and delivery of the event – watch this space!
