On Friday, 8th March, Newark’s community is set to unite once more at the YMCA Village for the Big Newark Sleep Out. This impactful event is dedicated to increasing awareness and funds for the urgent issue of homelessness, with a specific focus on supporting young individuals in the local Newark community. The initiative is a collaborative effort by YMCA and Newark Emmaus Trust, emphasising the shared commitment to addressing the challenges faced by those in need.
Helen Lambert, Director of Supported Housing at YMCA, emphasises the impact of the event on the local community: “In participating in the Big Newark Sleep Out, our goal is to illuminate the challenges of homelessness and mental health care in our community. This event transcends mere fundraising; it’s a concerted effort to forge a lasting impact on the lives of those who need our support the most.”
Nikki Burley, Chief Executive Officer of Newark Emmaus Trust, echoes this sentiment: “The Big Newark Sleep Out is not just about spending a night outdoors; it’s about experiencing the challenges faced by those who endure this every night. It’s an opportunity for our community to come together, raise awareness, and provide much-needed support to vulnerable young people.”
Last year’s Sleep Out, the inaugural event, saw nearly 50 participants braving temperatures as low as -3°C at the YMCA Village.
Cheska Asman, Homelessness Strategy and Safeguarding Officer at Newark and Sherwood District Council, who participated in the 2023 event, shares her perspective. “Taking part in the Big Newark Sleep Out last year gave me a glimpse into the physical challenges of sleeping on the streets. However, it can’t capture the deep isolation and desperation felt by those facing homelessness. We must come together, raise awareness, and offer support to break the cycle of despair. I encourage everyone who can to take part in this impactful event and show care, giving hope to those in need.”
This year, the campaign aims to surpass the previous fundraising success. Businesses or individuals are invited to participate, by joining the sleep-out or schools, Scouts, Brownies and Girl Guides organising their own pyjama day on 8 March.
To champion this essential cause for the second consecutive year, Buttercross Estates is standing strong behind the Big Newark Sleep Out, solidifying their dedication to building a more compassionate and resilient community. Daniel Otton, Managing Director at Buttercross Estates, reflects, “Having participated last year, I can attest that this event is more than just a sleep-out; it’s a potent symbol of unity and empathy. It unites individuals and businesses alike, all driven by a shared determination to combat homelessness in our local community.”
