Last weekend, our incredible climbing team from the YMCA Village took on the British Lead Championships in Manchester one of the biggest highlights in the UK competition calendar – and delivered an outstanding performance, with two climbers progressing through to the semi-finals.
As a GB selection event, this year’s Championships brought together the very best Lead climbers in the country. Competing in the Senior categories, our athletes faced 72 competitors in the Senior Men’s field and 68 in the Senior Women’s field. Among them were GB Team athletes and even an Olympian, making the level of competition exceptionally high.
Representing YMCA on the National Stage
Five YMCA climbers stepped up to compete in the Senior categories:
Senior Men:
- Anthony Everitt
- George Hammond
- Dylan Higgs-Shallard
Senior Women:
- Holly Bates
- Lois Glazier
This was not just another competition appearance. It was the result of years of commitment, belief and steady progression through the YMCA climbing pathway.
For Holly Bates and Lois Glazier, this marked their first appearance at the British Lead Championships. George Hammond and Anthony Everitt were competing for the second time, while Dylan Higgs-Shallard made his third appearance at this level.
What makes this even more special is that several of these climbers now give back to the programme as coaches and route setters. They are not only athletes, but role models for the next generation coming through the wall at the Village.

Semi-Final Success
Two YMCA climbers secured places in the semi-finals:
- Holly Bates climbed with confidence and composure to finish 24th in the Senior Women’s category.
- George Hammond, competing slightly injured, showed real determination to reach the semi-finals in the Senior Men’s category and finished 25th.
Anthony Everitt narrowly missed semi-final qualification by just one place. His performance, however, has already opened a new door. As a result of his climb at the Championships, he has been offered an opportunity to join the England Development Squad, a significant milestone that reflects both his potential and the quality of support behind him.
A Proud Coaching Moment
Luke Mansfield, Climbing Centre Manager at the Village, led the team in Manchester. Having coached the majority of these climbers from a young age, often in his spare time, seeing them step onto a national stage was a hugely proud moment.
“To say I’m proud doesn’t begin to explain it. I operate on creating opportunities for those around me, never pushing. To see climbers who have been part of my life for so long walk out in front of hundreds of people, streamed live online, approach their climb and fully lock in says so much about the work they’ve put in and the potential that lies ahead. It shows that anyone entering our facility could be next.”

More Than Medals
This achievement is about more than final positions. It highlights the strength of the YMCA climbing pathway, from youth sessions right through to senior national competition. It demonstrates what consistent coaching, community support and athlete dedication can achieve over time.
Last weekend was not only about reaching the semi-finals. It was about standing on one of the biggest stages in UK climbing and proving that YMCA athletes belong there.
A massive well done to the whole team. This is just the beginning. They are already setting their sights on next year and aiming even higher.
