Our YMCA Skilled Youth Climbers squad made their mark at the Midland Youth Climbing Series bouldering round in Milton Keynes on Sunday, 12 January. Representing the YMCA Climbing Centre at the YMCA Village, the team of six showcased their skills, determination, and team spirit in a thrilling start to the year’s climbing calendar.

The team, accompanied by our Climbing Centre Manager Luke Mansfield and Coach Emma Keenleyside, tackled eight unique bouldering challenges in the friendly and supportive atmosphere the competition is known for. The climbers competed in their respective age groups, demonstrating their growth, skill, and love for the sport.

The team tackled eight unique bouldering challenges

Here at YMCA, we  offer purpose-designed Skilled Youth sessions for those aged 14-18 years old who are already at NICAS Climbing Level 4 and above, providing them with the support they need to achieve their goals.

Among the standout performances was Anthony Everitt, 16, who climbed his way to an impressive third-place finish in a highly competitive category of 19 climbers. “It was such a great experience to test myself alongside other climbers. I’ve learned so much, and I can’t wait for the next round,” Anthony shared.

Eric Zalewski, 13, participated in his first-ever climbing competition, showcasing the great progress he’s made since joining the YMCA Climbing Centre in July 2022. A Level 4 climber in the National Indoor Climbing Scheme (NICAS), Eric faced the challenges head-on, demonstrating grit and enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, Lottie Downes, 14, brought her signature energy to the event. Known for her animated route-reading routine at the base of the wall, Lottie said, “Planning my route is one of my favourite parts of climbing—it’s like solving a puzzle. The competition really pushed me to think creatively and give it my all.”

Erin Williams, 13, and Anna White, 14, enjoyed representing us and climbed with focus and determination. Monty Chapman, 15, also made his competition debut, gaining invaluable experience for future events in the series.

For these young climbers, the competition was more than a test of skill—it was an opportunity to showcase their passion and determination in a supportive environment. Seeing the young people in our YMCA community thrive and succeed is inspiring.

Luke Mansfield, Climbing Centre Manager at YMCA Newark & Sherwood, was full of praise for the squad: “Seeing these young climbers tackle the competition with such enthusiasm and teamwork was fantastic. They’ve worked so hard to get here, and their performances reflect the effort they’ve put in. It’s not just about competing; it’s about building confidence and creating lifelong memories.”
