Nursery Chef

We’re looking for a chef that will work in the childcare wing at the Community & Activity Village.

As part of our brand-new Community & Activity Village in Newark, we are very excited to be opening our early-years YMCA Nursery welcoming babies and toddlers through to pre-school age children.

We are looking for a Nursery Chef to oversee the creation of a menu and the daily production of fresh, home-cooked nutritious meals and snacks for the children aged 6 weeks to 4 years.

Involved from day 1, you will work with the newly appointed Childcare & Nursery Manager to design a menu that provides quality, nutritious and delicious food for the children across the nursery day including lunch, tea and snacks for 90+ babies and children.

We will look for you to make suggestions and recommendations for menu choices including a variety of options to meet the needs of dietary requirements, allergies and intolerances.

We are looking for someone currently working in a childcare kitchen setting or commercial kitchen with a passion for making delicious meals for babies and children who shares our excitement for the launch of this new Nursery and your involvement from the beginning.

Job Purpose

  1. To serve good quality nutritious food in a clean and welcoming environment keeping children at the heart of the service.
  2. To ensure compliance with Health & Safety and all food regulations.
  3. Where required, support within the Nursery and deliver the highest quality care and education for all children to achieve and maintain an Outstanding Ofsted judgement.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. To understand children’s nutritional requirements and all food allergens.
  2. To prepare snacks, lunch and tea for all children in the nursery.
  3. In conjunction with the Childcare Manager prepare weekly menus for children.
  4. To ensure all meal planning and food ordering is in line with the agreed catering budgets.
  5. To maintain adequate stores and food stuffs in appropriate storage conditions.
  6. To ensure the kitchen and kitchen equipment are kept clean and tidy.
  7. To clean and defrost the freezer as necessary.
  8. To observe high standards of food hygiene during the preparation, cooking and serving of all foods.
  9. Maintain the Safer Food, Better Business documentation daily to comply with food safety management procedures and food hygiene regulations.
  10. Promote healthy eating with both staff and children.
  11. A commitment to Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
