At the YMCA Village, we believe in the power of sports to inspire, challenge, and bring people together. So, in the spirit of the Paris 2024 Olympics, we invited local reporters from The Newark Advertiser, Eloise Gilmore and Fionn Burrows, to step out of their comfort zones and experience the thrill of speed climbing at our world-class facilities.

As the excitement of the Olympic Games unfolded, we saw an opportunity to showcase our very own 15-metre-high IFSC Olympic-standard speed climbing wall. This impressive feature is just one part of our comprehensive climbing centre, which is designed to cater to both beginners and seasoned climbers. We were thrilled to challenge Eloise and Fionn to take on the wall and see how they fared against the clock.

Our experienced climbing coach, Callum Irons, was there to guide them every step of the way. Callum, who regularly scales the wall in just nine seconds, demonstrated the skill and precision required to excel in this dynamic sport. Under his watchful eye, Eloise and Fionn made their attempts, gaining a newfound appreciation for the athleticism and determination that speed climbing demands.

But it wasn’t just about competition; it was about fun, discovery, and personal achievement. After trying their hand at the speed wall, the reporters explored our Clip ‘n Climb zone, where they took on more accessible challenges suited for those new to the sport. This area is perfect for anyone looking to try climbing for the first time, with various walls and timed climbs that are both exciting and rewarding.

At the YMCA, we’re proud to offer a facility that welcomes climbers of all ages and abilities. Our climbing centre is a place where you can challenge yourself, develop new skills, and enjoy the camaraderie of a supportive community. Whether you’re inspired by the Olympics or just looking for a new way to stay active, we have something for everyone.
