Applications have now opened to take part in an exciting relay-style voyage around the UK coastline this Autumn! Eight crews of community members from Newark and Sherwood will embark on the Tall Ships Adventure to fundraise for YMCA Newark and Sherwood’s Community and Activity Village.
YMCA Newark and Sherwood’s Community and Activity Village is a not-for-profit initiative to tackle issues affecting young people and families. Alongside world-class health, arts, education and sporting facilities, the Village will be home to programmes that facilitate opportunities for the community at every point in their lives. The Village will break down barriers for young people and deliver industry-standard employment pathways – whether their ambitions lie in art, business, media or Olympic medals.
In support of the project, the volunteer crews will learn to sail alongside professionals from the Tall Ship Youth Trust on a 4 to 6 day voyage where they’ll eat, sleep and live on board. Starting in Portsmouth, there will be eight legs in total, with a new crew taking the helm at each port.
YMCA Newark and Sherwood are now inviting members of the local community to register their interest in committing to the Tall Ships Adventure fundraiser. Young people from Magnus Academy will be first crew to take to the waves, with other crews including CEOs, community groups and local organisations.

Participants will be creating blogs and videos about their journey, which they will be using to highlight important issues for local young people and families, such as mental health, apprenticeships and cuts to youth services.
The challenger yacht is set to depart from Portsmouth on August 30th, and will stop at Plymouth, Cardiff, Liverpool, Greenock, Inverness, Hull and London, before returning to Portsmouth again on October 18th.
“We are a charity, so our income is invested into scholarships and programmes that make sure every young person in Newark and Sherwood will have the chance to use our facilities and access our programmes” says Craig Berens, Chief Operating Officer of YMCA Newark and Sherwood.
“The Tall Ships Adventure fundraiser is an incredibly exciting opportunity for local people to be part of the journey, support a local cause – and they’ll have the time of their lives too.”
Those interested in taking part in the voyage can visit www.ymcans.org/join-the-crew to apply for a place or make a donation to the campaign.
